Hongkong Electric Company Secures Critical Infrastructure With Illumio

The Hongkong Electric Company (HK Electric), a century-old utility that maintains a 99.999% reliability record, needed to protect its critical power infrastructure from growing ransomware and nation-state threats. To preserve continuous service and its reputation, the company sought better visibility and control of east‑west traffic among servers and applications and wanted to implement Zero Trust host-based firewall rules across its data center.

HK Electric deployed Illumio Core after a successful proof of concept and now runs Illumio agents on 150+ servers to create a real‑time application dependency map and automate host‑based firewall policies. The solution delivered “x‑ray” visibility into traffic, made it straightforward to build and update least‑privilege controls at scale, reduced effort and costs, and prevented attackers from moving laterally inside the data center.
