Woodside completes Carnarvon Basin inversion study in 3 weeks with Ikon Science

Woodside, an Australian energy company, faced mixed drilling success in the Carnarvon Basin despite having 3D seismic data from a highly prospective area. Key exploration risks included the absence of hydrocarbon charge and top-seal leakage. To better assess these risks and reassess previously passed-over areas, Woodside partnered with vendor Ikon Science to reprocess and invert its historic Willem 3D seismic survey using the Ji-Fi (Joint Impedance Facies Inversion) service.

Ikon Science reprocessed the data through a broadband workflow and pre-stack depth migration before applying its Ji-Fi inversion technology. This Bayesian simultaneous inversion jointly solved for impedance and facies without the need for complex stratigraphic models, completing the entire study in just three weeks. The results strongly correlated to all input and blind test wells, perfectly predicted a gas fluid contact at the Pyxis discovery, and identified a new stratigraphic level for gas, providing significant confidence in predictions away from well control.
