A IGEL Case Study
Universitätsklinikum Freiburg faced the challenge of modernizing and simplifying IT for its care operations—supporting ~3,000 users across a large campus—while cutting procurement, management, maintenance and support costs and providing a cost‑effective mobile thin client solution. To address this, the hospital selected IGEL and standardized on the IGEL Universal Desktop range (IGEL UD3 LX, IGEL UD5 LX), IGEL Universal Desktop Converter 2 (UDC2) for notebook thin clients and the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS), alongside Citrix XenApp on Windows Server.
IGEL implemented a centrally managed thin‑client environment with >500 devices (525 in production), software thin‑clients for notebooks and profile‑based UMS management. The deployment delivered measurable benefits: a 50% reduction in desktop management costs, just two full‑time staff managing all thin clients, 24/7 operation with devices lasting up to ten years (≈87,600 hours), rapid rollouts (batches of 100 and ~10‑minute provisioning) and about a 50% smaller environmental footprint versus PCs. IGEL’s hardware, firmware and UMS were credited with improved performance, reliability and high user acceptance.
