UNC Health Care - Customer Case Study

UNC Health Care, the Chapel Hill–based not-for-profit integrated health system, needed a thin client solution to support a system-wide Citrix VDI rollout and to enable clinicians to roam between workstations while securely accessing the EPIC EMR and other Citrix Ecosystem applications. After a vendor “bake-off,” UNC Health Care selected IGEL and its Universal Desktop Converter (UDC), Universal Management Suite (UMS) and UD3 thin client to meet these requirements.

IGEL converted existing endpoints to its Linux-based thin clients with UDC and centralized management via UMS, integrating with Citrix XenDesktop and partners like Imprivata to deliver secure Roaming and Kiosk modes. The IGEL deployment cut image-creation time from 25–30 minutes to under 10 minutes, reduced capital expenditures, improved security and user experience, and positions UNC Health Care to scale to more than 15,000 VDI desktops.
