A IGEL Case Study
Emch+Berger Group (Emch+Berger WSB AG), a leading civil engineering and geomatics firm in Central Switzerland, faced a mandate to modernize and consolidate its data center, replace aging Windows XP workstations, and deliver resource‑intensive CAD and GIS applications more efficiently via outsourcing. To achieve a Software/Client‑as‑a‑Service model with minimal on‑site overhead, the IT provider Levantis adopted IGEL thin client technology, including the IGEL Universal Desktop Converter 2 (UDC2) and the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS).
IGEL’s solution converted roughly half of the 113 workstations into Linux thin clients (around 45 PCs converted locally with UDC2), enabling centralized rollout and remote management via UMS and turning old PCs into high‑performance Citrix HDX clients for CAD/GIS. The migration averaged about 20 minutes per workstation and device replacement time dropped to roughly 30 minutes, while on‑site support needs decreased across multiple sites—delivering lower administration overhead, extended PC lifecycles, improved graphics performance and a fixed‑price managed desktop offering. IGEL’s thin client stack was key to these measurable efficiency and cost‑savings gains.
