A IGEL Case Study
Ayrshire College, home to 5,500 students and 338 staff and recently relocated to a new £53 million campus, needed a flexible, environmentally friendly IT solution that fit a restricted budget and a tight deployment window. To avoid installing traditional desktops and to reuse existing laptops, the College chose IGEL—deploying IGEL UD3 thin clients and the IGEL Universal Desktop Converter (UDC) alongside a Citrix XenDesktop VDI platform.
IGEL supplied UD3 thin clients for 12 classrooms and UDC software to convert 400 laptops into Linux-based thin clients, integrated with Citrix VDI. The rollout was completed in minutes per device and within a two-week window, delivering quicker application start-up, extended laptop battery life to cover a full teaching day, reduced power use, easier remote management via IGEL’s tools, and broader student access across campus—benefiting all 5,500 students and enabling faster, more flexible teaching.
