Case Study: Three Gorges Hydropower Plant achieves efficient asset management and lean operations with IFS

A IFS Case Study

Preview of the Three Gorges Case Study

Three Gorges Hydropower Plant maintains valuableassets with fewer employees by adopting best practices from IFS

The Three Gorges Hydropower Plant (TGHP), managed by China Yangtze Power Co., is the world’s largest hydropower project and faced the challenge of operating and maintaining vast, technically intensive assets with a dramatically smaller workforce. TGHP set a goal to run the completed 18,200 MW plant with about 370 staff—far fewer than comparable facilities—requiring streamlined processes, tight cost control, and centralized management of equipment and documentation.

TGHP implemented IFS as an e-Project Management Information System (ePMS), integrating maintenance, inventory, purchasing, HR, finance and analytics on a single web-based platform. Built in 18 months and used by more than 200 employees, the solution standardized workflows, improved communication and decision-making, reduced overhead, enabled efficient maintenance of mission-critical assets, and positioned the plant to operate at full scale with only 370 employees while increasing availability and operational performance.
