Case Study: Scania achieves automatic machine protection with ifm vibration monitoring

A ifm efector Case Study

Scania prevents machine tool damage with ifm vibration monitoring on up to 4 sensors

Scania, a major Swedish vehicle manufacturer, faced the challenge of preventing costly unplanned downtime and damage to expensive workpieces caused by tool breakage and collisions in their automated machine tools. To address this, they partnered with vendor ifm efector to implement a real-time vibration monitoring solution using ifm's VSA006 accelerometer sensors and VSE100 evaluation units.

The solution from ifm efector involved installing vibration sensors directly on machine spindles to continuously monitor for unusual vibrations indicating tool failure or collisions. This data is processed by the evaluation unit, which can automatically send warnings to maintenance staff or stop the machine instantly to prevent damage. As a result, Scania achieved predictive maintenance, effectively prevented catastrophic machine and workpiece damage, and optimized their process parameters for maximum efficiency and machine protection.
