Equipment tracking and cost reductions through tech

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the only hospital in its Trust and a large, spread-out site in Derbyshire, struggled to keep track of 15,000 medical devices across 20 wards. Misplaced equipment was wasting staff time, increasing costs, and creating risk for life-critical care, especially during COVID-19. The Trust needed a better way to manage its inventory, loans, and device alerts, and turned to Idox and its iFIT hospital inventory and records management solution.

Idox implemented an RFID-based tracking network with readers, antennas, smart labels, and handheld units to monitor equipment across the hospital. The system gave the Clinical Engineering team and other departments real-time visibility, reduced search times, improved patient flow, and helped manage loans and rentals more efficiently. Idox’s solution also supported safer critical care during COVID-19 by tracking oxygen-driven equipment and improving equipment placement, while helping the Trust cut waste and reduce the cost of lost items.
