Moderna codifies culture in 42 days with IDEO

The customer Moderna faced the challenge of preserving its unique, entrepreneurial culture during a period of massive growth. After rapidly scaling to meet the demand for its COVID-19 vaccine, the influx of hundreds of new employees from more traditional pharmaceutical companies threatened to dilute the very culture of speed and risk tolerance that was the foundation of its success. Moderna partnered with the vendor IDEO to help codify this culture into a formal set of values.

IDEO worked with Moderna to interview long-time employees and gather stories that exemplified the company's core behaviors. These insights were crafted into a set of "Mindsets," which were then refined with employee feedback and leadership. IDEO also helped revamp the Moderna ONE onboarding process to integrate these Mindsets. The solution provided clarity for both new and existing employees, systematically scaling the culture and fulfilling a business imperative to prepare the company for its next phase of breakthroughs.
