Virginia Community College System - Customer Case Study

The Virginia Community College System (VCCS), which spans 23 community colleges across 40 campuses and manages over 1.2 million identities with roughly 235,000 active users, faced a brittle, custom IAM platform from 2005 that struggled with security, governance, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and slow contractor onboarding. Seeking a modern, scalable solution, VCCS selected Identity Automation and its RapidIdentity Cloud to replace the legacy system and meet state MFA mandates while unifying identity management across its distributed institutions.

Identity Automation deployed RapidIdentity Cloud (hosted on AWS) with a Distributed IAM model, automated lifecycle management, policy-driven identity governance, and MFA/SSO across integrated systems like Oracle Campus Solutions, G Suite, Office 365, and Canvas. The phased rollout with Moran Technology Consulting delivered measurable gains: system-wide MFA, 235 distinct SSO connections, reduced duplicate accounts, automation at scale across 23 colleges, and — according to VCCS — more progress in three months than the previous vendor achieved in a year, plus improved security and lower administrative burden.
