How Identity and Access Management is Enabling the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Statewide Move to Cloud Services

North Carolina State University, through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), needed a scalable identity and access management solution for its statewide NCEdCloud initiative. The challenge was to simplify login and account management across more than 250 LEAs and charter schools, reduce manual IT workload, improve security and compliance, and support a rapidly growing web-based K-12 environment. Identity Automation’s RapidIdentity / NCEdCloud IAM service was selected to meet these needs.

Identity Automation implemented a centralized IAM-as-a-Service platform with automated provisioning, single sign-on, and centralized identity control, while still allowing local district customization. The result was a highly available service managing about two million active accounts and nearly three million identities over its lifetime. In 2018 alone, the system processed 230,924,492 authentications, 2,651,575 password changes, and 20,714,205 identity updates, while delivering 99.9987% uptime and SSO for 537 applications.
