A Identity Automation Case Study
Houston Community College (HCC), the fourth-largest community college in the U.S. with more than 80,000 students, faculty, and staff and 140,000 annual user accounts, struggled with a high volume of manual, ad-hoc access requests—VPN provisioning for commuters, temporary facility and network access for guest faculty and students, and public computer accounts—that consumed central IT time and hindered strategic projects. To modernize processes, Houston Community College turned to Identity Automation’s RapidIdentity, including its Workflow Engine.
Using Identity Automation’s RapidIdentity Workflow Engine, HCC automated user lifecycle management and empowered admins to create no-code workflows for approvals, temporary accounts, and time‑bound entitlements. The change cut VPN group administration from hours per day to minutes via batch workflows, eliminated paper-based temporary access processes with automated account and entitlement provisioning, enabled front-line staff to request temporary IDs while enforcing two-week limits and logging activity in a searchable database, and freed central IT to focus on higher‑impact initiatives.
