Biometrics Works With Kindergarten Children In The Cafeteria Every Day

Waiakea Elementary School in Hilo, Hawaii, part of the Hawaii school district, needed a better way to manage lunch lines and student meal accounts. Their card- and PIN-based system caused lost or shared cards, double scans, charging errors, and long lines that slowed service and reduced students’ lunch and recess time. The school worked with identiMetrics and its biometric finger-scanning ID management system, used with the Meal Tracker point-of-sale system.

identiMetrics implemented finger scanning so students could be identified quickly and accurately in the cafeteria without cards or PINs. The results were immediate: cashiers mastered the system, parent concerns about privacy were addressed, and students moved through lunch lines much faster. The cafeteria was empty about 10 minutes before the next lunch period, improving accuracy, reducing errors, and helping students get a full lunch and more recess time.
