OSF HealthCare, a not-for-profit Catholic health system employing 24,000 people, faced significant workforce challenges including clinician burnout and staffing shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their nursing leadership sought to tap into the knowledge of frontline teams to discover novel solutions. They partnered with the vendor Ideawake to use its idea management platform to collect targeted ideas from employees.

Ideawake implemented a custom workflow for a six-week innovation challenge that invited over 600 nurses to participate. The solution facilitated real-time collaboration using features like chat, upvoting, and tagging. The challenge resulted in the collection of over 100 ideas, which were categorized into five focus areas for vetting and implementation. This process gave nurses a voice, leading to increased satisfaction and a path to giving them back more time for patient care.
