Giving Back Time to Nurses Amidst Workforce Challenges

OSF Healthcare, an integrated not-for-profit Catholic health system serving nearly 1 million patients across Illinois and Michigan with over 24,000 Mission Partners in 147 locations, faced rising patient demand, clinician burnout, and staffing shortages during the COVID-19 waves. To tap frontline ideas from nursing staff, OSF Healthcare partnered with Ideawake and used Ideawake’s idea-management platform to launch a targeted innovation challenge.

Working with Ideawake, OSF’s Innovation and Nursing Leadership teams implemented a custom workflow with real-time chat, upvoting and tagging so decision-makers could triage and track ideas. Over six weeks the challenge engaged 688 users and generated 102 ideas, 107 comments and 456 votes; ideas were sorted into five focus areas (including EMR optimization, discharge scheduling, new technology, quick wins and role evaluation) and assigned leads for vetting and implementation, leading to increased staff satisfaction and improvements in caregiver workflow.
