Cloud Communication Platform eliminates $100 SMS billing overages with Ideas2IT Technologies

A cloud communication platform faced unexpected SMS billing inflation, with customers being overcharged by about $100 monthly. The issue was traced to invisible non-GSM Unicode characters in messages, which triggered a costly encoding mode. No existing tools could detect these characters before billing. Ideas2IT Technologies was engaged to diagnose and solve this problem.

Ideas2IT built a two-layer solution: a backend Java sanitization layer for the SMS pipeline and a frontend Chrome extension for real-time detection. They then productized this fix into an open-source Unicode Toolkit, expanding it to detect over 30 confusable characters and handle various encoding conversions. The solution immediately eliminated the billing overage. Furthermore, the released toolkit saw rapid organic adoption, reaching over 40 users across the US, India, and Japan within two weeks.
