MRT develops IP68 personal locator beacon with ID&C for safer sea rescue

Marine Rescue Technologies (MRT) partnered with Industrial Design Consultancy Ltd (IDC) to develop the sMRT Shield, a groundbreaking personal locator beacon. Their challenge was to create a robust and reliable device for global use that could automatically deploy an antenna in a water emergency across three communication platforms, while also being usable on land.

IDC's solution involved extensive usability analysis, including testing with offshore gear to understand user interaction in emergencies. They engineered a one-handed activation process for land use and a unique automatic antenna deployment mechanism triggered by life jacket inflation. IDC developed the product with robust materials to an IP68 rating, ensuring it could withstand extreme environments. Through detailed mechanical engineering and prototyping, IDC delivered a manufacturable product that met all of MRT's requirements for optimal safety at sea.
