Preparation pays off City leaders use iCompass automation for storm recovery

The City of Clinton, Iowa, a government organization serving about 25,000 residents, faced a major recovery challenge in August 2020 when a rare derecho storm hit during the COVID-19 shutdown period. The storm brought 80-plus mile-per-hour winds, knocked out power for most residents, disrupted cell service and utilities, and caused widespread damage, leaving city leaders needing a fast way to keep the public informed. iCompass helped the city manage communications during this emergency.

Using iCompass’s web-based automated notification tools, Clinton leaders were able to post multiple press releases per day and send immediate alerts to residents and other affected parties, even while power and connectivity were limited. With staff able to work from a city office generator, the city kept recovery information flowing quickly and efficiently, helping restore normalcy faster. Lisa Frederick, city clerk and deputy city administrator, called iCompass “a lifesaver,” highlighting the value of the vendor’s system in a difficult crisis.
