Case Study: Network Rail improves railway safety and inspection efficiency with Icomera DG8 Visual Inspection Units

A Icomera Case Study

Network Rail converts Class 153s into VIUs with Icomera in under 1 year

Network Rail, the owner and infrastructure manager of most of the British railway network, faced significant safety risks and operational inefficiencies from manual switch and crossing inspections. Following several serious incidents, they sought a proof-of-concept for an automated alternative. They partnered with vendor Icomera and its DG8 division for a turnkey design, engineering, and installation service to convert trains into Visual Inspection Units.

Icomera's DG8 division delivered the solution by converting retired Class 153 trains into VIUs, equipping them with eleven high-resolution cameras and a hybrid power system. This allowed for automated, high-speed track inspection and continuous data transmission. The project won 'Safety Achievement of the Year' at the National Rail Awards for Icomera, demonstrating a successful move towards a preventative "Predict and Prevent" maintenance strategy that greatly enhanced safety and operational efficiency.
