A Icinga Case Study
The National Biodiversity Institute (INBio), an environmental NGO in Costa Rica, needed a way to monitor the temperature and humidity levels within its biological collections to ensure their preservation. To address this challenge, Systems Administrator Herson Esquivel Vargas implemented a monitoring solution using Icinga and other free, low-cost components.
The solution involved using a sheeva-plug computer with a USB sensor to collect environmental data, which then reported back to a standalone Icinga server. This implementation successfully monitors 8 hosts and 15 services. Herson Esquivel Vargas cited Icinga's strong community support as a key reason for its selection, and the project's success was significant enough to be documented in a formal paper.
