State Library of Queensland builds an API for 60,000 Corley Collection photos with Icelab

The State Library of Queensland partnered with Icelab to create a solution for engaging the public with the Corley Collection, an archive of over 60,000 photographs of Queensland homes. The challenge was to build a robust and flexible API that would allow for the exploration, categorization, and annotation of this vast digital collection.

Icelab designed and developed a custom API built with Ruby, Postgres, and Elasticsearch. The solution provided 17 different endpoints that enabled users to search, tag, geolocate photos, and contribute their own stories and images. This work by Icelab formed the foundational infrastructure that powered the public-facing Corley Explorer, directly facilitating community engagement and the enrichment of the library's archival materials.
