National Museum of Australia pushes browser performance with Icelab using hundreds of Cup Day images

The National Museum of Australia wanted to create a dynamic online experience for the "Flemington on Cup Day" project. The challenge was to capture the excitement of the event digitally and develop a technical solution that could be easily repurposed from a physical museum interactive to a public website. The vendor, Icelab, an Australian design and development studio, was engaged for this project.

Icelab's solution involved a panographic approach using hundreds of images taken by multiple photographers on race day, stitched together in a browser-based interactive. The entire site was built with standard web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to ensure high performance and repurposability. The vendor, Icelab, successfully created an engaging website that pushes the limits of web standards, providing an in-depth exploration of the race that is both viewable and searchable online.
