Weather impact analysis using OLAP cubes

NextGen Federal Systems, an IT and professional services firm supporting C4ISR, modeling & simulation, and cybersecurity, was awarded an SBIR Phase II by the US Air Force Research Laboratory to build IMPACT — a system that dynamically generates and assesses weather constraints on military aircraft missions by analyzing gridded weather forecasts. To address the challenge of high dimensionality and scalability, NextGen used icCube’s OLAP cube platform to store weather forecast data at multiple resolutions and support fast, multi-dimensional analysis.

icCube was integrated programmatically: NextGen loads fact tables and builds OLAP cubes via XMLA using the icCube Management API and queries the cubes with MDX, leveraging aggregate measures for rapid queries. The icCube solution enabled IMPACT to deliver continuous, scalable weather analysis — “all the weather for all the missions all the time” — providing fast, multi-resolution assessments that meet the AFRL SBIR requirements for operational mission planning.
