A IBM Case Study
The University of Birmingham, a major UK research institution, needed a better way to manage rapidly growing research data as more users ran increasingly complex simulations. Working with IBM, the university sought to reduce data-loss risk, improve compliance with data protection rules, and support its researchers with more reliable access to data using IBM Storage Scale and IBM Storage Protect.
IBM implemented IBM Storage Scale as the core of the university’s software-defined storage environment, along with IBM Storage Protect for backup and archiving. The solution gave the university a single data management plane, better visibility into data use, and easier compliance, while supporting 5,000 researchers. IBM also helped the university save an estimated 2 FTEs through more efficient operations, with minimal disruption and lower-cost, more flexible storage management.
