A IBM Case Study
UMC Freiburg (Universitätsklinikum Freiburg), a large hospital with over 80 clinical and operational applications, needed to integrate its systems to get a unified view of patient data. The challenge was to connect various applications, which constantly required change, to its legacy back-end patient data and clinical report storage systems while adhering to HL7 messaging standards, a resource-intensive process that slowed down the adoption of new software.
IBM provided a solution using IBM Integration Bus with its Healthcare Connectivity Pack and IBM MQ software. This created a robust integration layer that streamlined data transformation and secure messaging between applications. The result was a dramatic reduction in the time needed to implement new interfaces, from 1-6 months down to just one week. This agility saved critical resources and gave the hospital the flexibility to choose the best applications without integration concerns, directly improving operational and clinical effectiveness.
