Transit company BOGESTRA digitizes route planning, optimizing transfer wait times

BOGESTRA AG, the public transit operator in Germany’s Ruhr region, needed a better way to plan routes and transfers after relying on time-consuming, spreadsheet-based timetable planning. The company wanted to reduce missed connections and shorten passenger wait times while improving coordination with neighboring transit providers, and it worked with IBM and IBM Business Partner Bechtle to find a digital solution.

IBM helped BOGESTRA deploy the SPOO Group transport planning platform on IBM Cloud, using IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service and cloud database technology. The new system added real-time simulation, Google Maps integration, KPI alerts, and web-based line-sharing, enabling faster multi-user planning and digital coordination with adjacent transit companies. BOGESTRA said the platform optimized its entire route network in a short time, saved massive amounts of manual effort, and laid the foundation for more customer-oriented planning with shorter transfer wait times.
