Blueprint Genetics, a genetic testing company founded in 2011, needed to automate sequencing and interpret unprecedented volumes of tests so it could deliver results in weeks rather than months. To meet that challenge, Blueprint Genetics partnered with IBM and used IBM Hybrid Cloud along with IBM Analytics and Content Services to build a scalable, end-to-end interpretation workflow.

IBM implemented an integrated stack — including IBM BigInsights for Apache Hadoop, IBM Watson Explorer, IBM Spectrum Scale, SoftLayer and IBM Business Automation Workflow (Case Manager) — to ingest, enrich, store data and standardize the interpretation process. The IBM solution boosted analyst productivity by 30–50%, enabled delivery of results to most clients in 14–21 days versus competitors’ ~30 days, and is expected to triple processing speed and capacity as experience grows.
