A IBM Case Study
Shell, the global energy and petrochemical company, wanted to accelerate its net-zero goal by helping the mining industry tackle decarbonization, operational efficiency, safety, and digital transformation. To do that, Shell partnered with IBM and used IBM Consulting and the IBM Garage methodology to co-create a solution for a sector that consumes large amounts of energy and needs better data-driven sustainability tools.
IBM helped Shell launch OREN, an open mining optimization platform that brings together digital solutions across the mining value chain. Built on IBM Cloud, IBM Cloud Pak for Data, IBM Environmental Intelligence Suite, and related IBM technologies, OREN went from concept to market in just eight months and later reached version 2.0. Shell and IBM also validated use cases with 40 mining customers, with initial intelligent solutions focused on emissions management and tailings/water management to improve sustainability, reduce costs, and enable automated, smarter operations.
