Case Study: Alitalia achieves smoother, safer flights and 70% improved weather data with IBM Hybrid Cloud (WSI Fusion)

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the Alitalia Case Study

Real-time weather analytics lift comfort levels sky-high for happier, more relaxed passengers

Alitalia needed to give passengers smoother, safer flights by avoiding turbulence and other adverse weather in real time. To solve this, it turned to IBM — using The Weather Company’s WSI Fusion (an IBM Business) and IBM Hybrid Cloud capabilities to embed real‑time weather analytics directly into its flight dispatch processes so crews can re‑route aircraft while airborne.

IBM’s WSI Fusion was integrated with Alitalia’s dispatch and ACARS messaging to deliver actionable, global weather insights and 24/7 flight tracking. The result: a 70% increase in weather‑data quality for smarter planning, improved passenger comfort and safety, up to 25,000 kg of jet fuel saved per month (lowering costs and emissions), and faster, more efficient route adjustments that measurably optimized operations.
