Case Study: Westpac New Zealand Ltd. achieves transformative mobile banking and 60% operating-cost reduction with IBM

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the Westpac New Zealand Ltd Case Study

Putting unprecedented banking power in customers’ hands transforms mobile banking

Westpac New Zealand Ltd., the country’s second-largest bank with more than 1.5 million customers, faced a fragmented mobile experience where apps offered limited features and required multiple logins. To deliver a consistent, device-agnostic mobile banking experience and a single-view timeline for multi-account access, Westpac engaged IBM, leveraging IBM Watson Explorer, IBM WebSphere DataPower, IBM MobileFirst Platform Foundation, IBM System x3650 M4 and IBM Global Business/Technology Services.

IBM implemented the Westpac One platform with cloud-based analytics, a consolidated customer view and a cloud-hosted, cross-platform application deployment capability. The solution cut monthly operating costs by 60% (from NZD 1,000,000 to NZD 400,000), enabled credit and loan decisions within 60 seconds, sped multi-platform app development and deployment, and drove month-over-month growth in online and mobile banking usage—placing Westpac’s digital adoption among the highest globally.
