A IBM Case Study
Compuware, a software company modernizing its internal development process for DevOps, found that its sprawling distributed x86 server environment was slowing agility, increasing maintenance work, and driving up costs. To address this, Compuware turned to IBM and IBM Z enterprise servers as the strategic platform for core workloads, while moving non-core systems to SaaS applications in the public cloud.
IBM helped Compuware implement a two-platform IT strategy that connected IBM Z with cloud services through RESTful APIs, supported by tools like IBM z/OS Provisioning Toolkit, Db2, and CICS. The result was a leaner, more flexible environment that cut annual costs by USD 5 million, reduced electricity costs by USD 12,000 a year, shrank the data center footprint from 77 racks to 12, and eliminated 19 tons of obsolete equipment while enabling a stronger DevOps culture.
