A IBM Case Study
Providence, a 120,000‑caregiver healthcare system operating 52 hospitals and over 1,000 clinics, faced rising infrastructure costs, technical debt and cultural/skills gaps as it began migrating to cloud for greater flexibility and efficiency. To manage the transition and protect critical patient‑care applications, Providence adopted IBM Turbonomic hybrid cloud cost‑optimization software.
IBM implemented Turbonomic automation and optimization (including Providence’s “Project Tetris” cleanup) to safely right‑size on‑premises resources and drive cloud elasticity during the Azure migration. The IBM solution helped Providence migrate more than 1,900 workloads to Azure in 10 months (out of ~3,000 total), achieved over USD 2 million in savings through optimization actions, and maintained application performance even at peak demand.
