Panasonic Connect uses AI to speed chip development and increase yield

Panasonic Connect, a unit of Panasonic Holdings Corporation, needed help tackling the growing complexity of semiconductor packaging and manufacturing, where longer development cycles, trial-and-error recipe tuning, and rising quality demands were hurting speed and yield. To address this, Panasonic partnered with IBM and IBM Research/IBM Consulting to add advanced analytics and AI to its process automation equipment.

IBM helped Panasonic co-create smart factory solutions for plasma dicing and plasma cleaning, using deep learning, machine learning, and visual decision-support tools. The results included up to a 30% reduction in development cycle time and the potential to cut equipment maintenance costs by 50%, while also reducing waste and improving production quality.
