Melbourne Water streamlines its sustainability reporting to create a single system of record for energy use and ESG performance

Melbourne Water, a government-owned authority managing Greater Melbourne’s water and treatment networks, needed a better way to track energy use and ESG data as energy costs, emissions, and sustainability reporting demands grew. Its legacy system relied on manual spreadsheets and file uploads, creating poor data quality, slow reporting, and limited access to insights across the organization.

To solve this, Melbourne Water implemented the IBM Envizi ESG Suite to create a single source of truth for energy and sustainability data. With IBM, it automated data consolidation from hundreds of sources, cut sustainability report generation from days to a few hours, improved end-of-month accrual accuracy to within 0.5% of final invoicing, and identified energy-saving opportunities that have helped reduce bills by hundreds of thousands of dollars.
