Melbourne Water improves stormwater management with IBM Maximo solutions

Melbourne Water, the Victorian water utility responsible for flood prevention and drainage across a vast network of stormwater assets, needed a better way to inspect and maintain about 4,000 collection pits and grates as extreme rainfall and flooding risks increased. Working with IBM and using the IBM Maximo Application Suite, Melbourne Water sought to reduce reliance on manual, time-based inspections and improve the operational state of stormwater grates.

IBM implemented an IoT- and AI-enabled solution using IBM Maximo Health, IBM Maximo Monitor, IBM Maximo Visual Inspection, and IBM Cloud to automate visual inspections at trial sites. The results included a shift to condition-based maintenance, reduced onsite inspections, potential savings of thousands of staff hours, and expected annual cost savings ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars as the system expands across more critical locations.
