Meeting COVID-19 head-on with data-driven insights

North York General Hospital, a Toronto-area community academic hospital, needed a more flexible way to track quality-based procedures, emergency department performance, and other care metrics while meeting Ontario funding and reporting requirements. Using IBM Cognos Analytics and other IBM analytics tools, the hospital also wanted to move beyond static reports and gain real-time, data-driven insights to improve care delivery.

IBM implemented a modern analytics stack for North York General Hospital, including IBM PureData System for Analytics, IBM DataStage, IBM SPSS Modeler, and upgraded Cognos Analytics dashboards. The solution replaced more than 100 static reports with interactive dashboards, helped identify ED bottlenecks, and supported a COVID-19 command center launched in less than two weeks. As a result, North York General Hospital improved ED efficiency, increased performance, and secured an additional CAD 3 million in annual government funding.
