A IBM Case Study
The Poseidon Project, a voluntary initiative led by the IBM Center for Advanced Studies, faced the global challenge of reducing agricultural water usage. Overconsumption from inefficient irrigation practices was depleting river basins and causing significant environmental damage.
IBM developed a solution using its Bluemix cloud platform, IBM Internet of Things Foundation, and IBM Cloudant database to create a network of low-cost, Internet of Things-enabled soil moisture sensors. This allowed for data-driven irrigation, helping farmers water crops only when necessary. The project successfully educated farmers and students, raised global awareness, and created a scalable model for conserving water resources in agriculture.
