Case Study: Cloud-Nanny achieves real-time intelligent child-safe web filtering and 50% faster time-to-market with IBM Hybrid Cloud

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the Cloud-Nanny Case Study

Making the Internet a safer place for families with intelligent real-time traffic management

Cloud-Nanny, a maker of smart home routers and the ChildRouter traffic analytics service, needed a way to keep children safe online by classifying and blocking unsuitable websites in real time without slowing browsing. To solve this, Cloud-Nanny partnered with IBM and built on IBM Hybrid Cloud services—including IBM Bluemix, Db2 on Cloud/dashDB and IBM Analytics for Apache Spark—to replace manual blacklists with an intelligent, scalable filtering system.

Using IBM’s managed cloud databases for sub-40-microsecond lookups and IBM Analytics for Apache Spark to train a real-time website classifier, the solution automatically allows, blocks or flags sites for parental review and learns from feedback. The IBM-based architecture helped Cloud-Nanny bring ChildRouter to production in 14 months (a development cycle they say is about 50% faster than traditional environments), reducing parental oversight time while proactively protecting children online.
