Major broadcaster reduces resource contention and improves performance

BBC Studios, the BBC’s commercial arm, was running its on-premises IT environment at over 95% capacity and dealing with frequent application performance issues, resource contention, and end-user complaints. With a lean team and limited visibility into root causes, the organization needed a way to reduce costs while maintaining reliable performance across about 1,000 virtual machines. It turned to IBM Turbonomic Application Resource Management to help manage the environment.

IBM implemented Turbonomic automation to provide full-stack visibility, identify performance issues like a storage caching problem, and recommend intelligent resizing and placement actions. BBC Studios first used the recommendations manually, then automated scheduled resizing for key applications, reducing complaints and eliminating downtime. The solution also reclaimed 228 GB of memory and 22 vCPUs in one month, helping BBC Studios improve performance and free the team to focus on strategic work.
