A IBM Case Study
Oncor, a major electric distribution and transmission company, faced the challenge of needing to modernize its grid to proactively manage outages and meet sophisticated energy demands. Their goal was to identify and fix service issues without requiring customer contact. To accomplish this, they partnered with vendor IBM and its business partners to implement a smart grid solution utilizing a Meter Data Management System (MDMS) built with IBM Informix TimeSeries and other software.
The solution implemented by IBM provided Oncor with near real-time data from smart meters, enabling the utility to pinpoint and address outages and potential faults proactively. This resulted in a 40% reduction in maintenance trucks dispatched during a severe weather event and empowered consumers to reduce their electrical consumption. IBM's integrated system gave Oncor greater visibility into its grid, minimized service disruptions, and improved overall reliability.
