Case Study: Kutxabank achieves resilient always-on banking with IBM virtualization

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the Kutxabank Case Study

Kutxabank embraces virtualization to build resilience into every transaction

Kutxabank, a financial institution in Spain's Basque region, faced a significant challenge following a four-way consolidation with other banks. The CIO, Koldo Etxeberria, needed to integrate the core systems, datacenters, and thousands of workstations and ATMs for the new holding company without any data loss or downtime for its 6,500 employees and 2.8 million customers. To build a resilient, data-dependent future, the bank turned to vendor IBM for a solution involving virtualization.

The solution implemented by IBM was a comprehensive, end-to-end managed service contract. IBM developed a virtualized infrastructure using its servers, moving storage and processing to secured datacenters. This allowed Kutxabank to convert all workstations to thin clients over a single weekend, dramatically improving resiliency, security, and employee mobility. The results included streamlined administration, enhanced data security, and a resilient "always-on" architecture with near-zero recovery time for critical services, enabling the bank to focus on customer satisfaction and innovation.
