Keeping health insurance customers covered with fast, accurate medical bill analysis

Central Nacional Unimed (CNU), a major Brazilian corporate health insurer serving about 1.67 million customers, faced slow, error-prone manual processing of roughly 1.3 million medical bills per month that threatened timely reimbursements and drove up costs. To modernize workflows, CNU engaged IBM and adopted IBM Enterprise Content Management solutions—including IBM Datacap, IBM FileNet Content Manager and IBM Business Automation Workflow—to digitize documents and automate bill analysis.

IBM implemented a centralized electronic content repository and automated case-management workflows that capture and index bills, present all relevant information to analysts in a single view, and integrate with CNU’s ERP. The deployment enabled faster, more accurate processing of ~1.3M bills/month, delivering a 90% reduction in administrative costs, a 25% cut in time to analyze medical bills and a 10% shorter average processing time—allowing timelier payments, higher throughput and growth without adding staff.
