Innocens BV uses predictive AI to protect the most vulnerable newborns

Antwerp University Hospital’s neonatology team faced the challenge of detecting sepsis in premature newborns early enough to enable timely treatment and avoid serious complications. Working with IBM, the hospital’s partner Innocens BV set out to use AI and predictive technology to speed diagnosis and improve care for at-risk infants.

IBM helped implement an edge computing solution using machine learning and IBM Cloud that analyzes real-time vital signs from medical sensors. The system identifies sepsis risk factors up to several hours faster, is 75% accurate in detecting severe sepsis, and produces fewer than one false alarm per week, helping doctors intervene earlier and more effectively.
