A IBM Case Study
Lefdal Mine Datacenter sought to create one of Europe's largest, most secure, and environmentally sustainable data centers by repurposing a massive abandoned mine in Norway. The challenge was to design a highly resilient technical infrastructure that could leverage the unique underground location and local renewable energy sources. Vendor IBM was brought on as the technology partner to develop the technical design and provide quality assurance for the entire datacenter blueprint.
The solution implemented by IBM involved creating a resilient, modular datacenter design powered by 100% renewable hydroelectric and wind power and cooled by nearby fjord water. This approach, featuring pre-built server containers, allowed for rapid deployment and massive scalability. The result is a highly secure facility with a exceptional power usage effectiveness (PUE) of under 1.1, meaning almost all energy powers the IT equipment directly. IBM's partnership was fundamental in establishing Lefdal as a future-proof, world-class facility offering robust resiliency services.
