A IBM Case Study
The State of Rhode Island turned to IBM during the COVID‑19 pandemic after rapid case growth exposed gaps in its ability to ingest, consolidate and analyze high volumes of disparate data from hospitals, labs, contact tracing and other sources. RIDOH’s Data and Analytics team lacked automated pipelines, sufficient staff and the systems needed to produce timely, trusted insights for the governor, public‑health leaders and the public.
IBM implemented a cloud‑based COVID‑19 data lake on AWS, integrated Salesforce case‑investigation and contact‑tracing data, automated daily data feeds and geospatial analytics, and supplied data engineers, scientists and analytics methods through IBM Consulting (including IBM Consulting for AI at Scale). As a result, Rhode Island shortened geospatial analytics production from ~3 days to as few as 4 hours, processed up to ~1 million test results per month, delivered near‑real‑time insights to decision makers, improved equitable allocation of resources, and ensured continuity of operations.
