How the world’s largest ad company optimizes FinOps

WPP, the world’s largest marketing services company, faced rapidly rising cloud costs and limited visibility after moving to a hybrid, multicloud IT model. With hundreds of cloud accounts and major cloud sprawl, the company needed better insight into spend and a way to optimize resources across its global environment. IBM helped WPP address this challenge with IBM Apptio Cloudability and IBM Turbonomic.

IBM implemented a FinOps approach that gave WPP consolidated cloud spend visibility and AI-driven rightsizing recommendations, plus automated resizing actions. The results were strong: WPP gained visibility across 99% of its cloud landscape, achieved about USD 2 million in savings in the first three months, completed around 1,000 resizing actions every one to two months, and cut yearly cloud spend by about 30%.
