Case Study: Coinbase strengthens crypto trust with IBM Security Randori Recon and X-Force Attack Targeted Services

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the Coinbase Case Study

How cybersecurity helps uphold trust for a leading cryptocurrency platform

Coinbase, one of the world’s leading cryptocurrency platforms, needed to maintain customer trust while protecting a large, cloud-based attack surface from increasingly frequent cyberattacks. As the company grew through rapid product development and acquisitions, it looked for stronger attack surface management and red teaming capabilities. IBM Security Randori Recon and IBM X-Force Attack Targeted services were chosen to help Coinbase secure its environment.

IBM implemented a mix of automated attack surface scanning and expert human red teaming, later shifting from mostly independent red teaming to more collaborative purple teaming with Coinbase’s security teams. This helped Coinbase close issues faster, improve detection planning, and better assess acquired environments for shadow IT and unknown risks. The solution delivered more targeted tests and a more consistent positive impact, including closing one visibility gap within a couple of days.
