Case Study: Earth Signal achieves faster seismic processing and 20x greater server density with IBM Power Systems

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the Earth Signal Case Study

Helping clients strike oil with ultra-fast, ultra-dense computing

Earth Signal, a seismic data processor for the oil and gas industry, faced the challenge of processing massive data sets for clients faster and at a lower cost. Constrained by physical space and power in their data center, they needed a solution to dramatically increase their computational density and performance to meet tight client deadlines for land bid decisions.

To address this, IBM provided Earth Signal with Power Systems S822L servers running Linux on POWER8 processors. The solution delivered a massive performance boost, with one IBM POWER8 CPU outperforming five Intel Xeon CPUs on their benchmark. This resulted in a 20x increase in server density and the ability to complete jobs up to 40 hours faster, directly enabling the company to win more business.
