A IBM Case Study
Nukissiorfiit, Greenland’s government-owned utility company, faced a difficult budgeting and forecasting challenge as it worked to supply clean water, electricity, and heat across a vast, remote country while expanding renewable energy and hydropower projects. Its annual planning process was rigid and time-consuming, with 70 people spending significant effort to produce forecasts that quickly became outdated. IBM, working with partner CogniTech, helped Nukissiorfiit modernize this process using IBM Cognos Analytics and IBM Planning Analytics.
IBM implemented an AI-driven rolling forecast solution that combined financial, operational, and weather data into one model for monthly planning and better visibility into P&L and cash flow. The results were significant: the planning team was reduced from 70 input providers to 9, forecast preparation time fell by 80% from about 1,000 hours a year to under 200, and the company gained more accurate, flexible forecasts to support faster decisions and more confident investment in infrastructure.
